Thanks to all of you who responded:

Various ways of fixing the problem were addressed, eeprom settings,
/etc/ttytab options, cable problems... etc.

The one fix that did work was that my modem came configured w/ DCD high and I needed to turn it off like this:
%tip cua0
connected
AT&V Shows current settings....

OK

The field that needed to be changed was &C0 (on the STORED PROFILE 1)
this needed to be changed to &C1 like this:
AT&C1
OK

This allows DCD to follow the state of the data carrier (DC) from the remote modem.

Hope that this helps.

Thanks again to those who responded..

Unfortunately, I seem to have another problem. When I dial in from home, I get a CONNECT 2400 mssg on my screen and I have to hit <ENTER> ~20 times to get a login prompt. Any ideas ?????
