Many thanks to *many* people for concice and prompt replies to my problem.
I'm enclosing one reply for a summary, everyone said pretty much the same
thing. Thanks again!

It appears that there are problems with the setup of the
"174.134.in-addr.arpa" domain. The "in-addr.arpa" domain is used
to answer questions of the form: Given the IP address W.X.Y.Z,
what is the hostname corresponding to the given address?
"gethostbyaddr(3)" uses this sort of lookup.

Apparently there are no entries in the "174.134.in-addr.arpa" domain
for your IP addresses, IP: 134.174.74.20 and IP: 134.174.74.21. There
should be a couple PTR type records:

20.74.174.134.in-addr.arpa IN PTR sparcy.dfci.harvard.edu.
21.74.174.134.in-addr.arpa IN PTR tempdemo.dfci.harvard.edu.
