Thanks to the many replies. For the first problem ('w' garbage), people
suggested that I might have booted from a kernel other than /vmunix, which
is the name of the kernel assumed by w, ps and various other programs.
I hadn't. Others, though, suggested that I might have the 'w' executable
for the wrong architecture in my path. Well, as it turns out these people
were close; the explanation lies in the third common suggestion that people
made: that I installed 4.1 from CDROM, which indeed I did. The Sun 4.1
distribution on CDROM has some sun3x kernel executables where the sun3
kernel executables ought to be. The problem is therefore just annoying, but
nothing terribly worrysome.

The second problem was a silly one of nfs exported filesystem permissions,
as error 13 indicates (see /usr/include/sys/errno.h).
