SUMMARY: OW on SPARC 2/GS (cgtwelve)

Earlier this week I asked:

Does OpenWindows run on a SPARC 2/GS (cgtwelve)? The OW install
guide lists other 24-bit framebuffers, but does not mention the
    cgtwelve.

If the cgtwelve is not supported, anyone know if it will be in the
new version of OW. Also, is it supported under X11R5?

The answers that I received indicated that OW Version 2 would run on the
GS, if the latter was operated in "monochrome mode". OW Version 3
(Beta) does support the cg12 framebuffer, although some people expressed
some problems with it. OW Version 3 (Beta) is available from your Sun
rep, but they ask that they install it because the installation is
"nontrivial".

X11R5 probably does not support the GS at this time, but someone
provided GS support for X11R4 and the feeling was someone might soon do
it for R5.

Thanks to all for your replies. Some are included in digest format
below for those who want more details.

OW version 3.0 (just announced last week) runs on a GS.

OW version 2.0 is "unsupported" on a GS. In fact, it will run
in monochrome ONLY, will not run in color.

You want to get OW version 3.0.

As to X11R5, I have no idea...

cgtwelve is supported in OW2 in monocrome mode only. OW3 does have support.
r5 support is unlikely in the sample server, but wouldn't be surprised if it
is done by someone soon.

My understanding is that no, it is not currently supported, but will be on
OW 3.0.

OW 2.0 runs on cgtwelve, but you don't get colors - it runs monochrome.
OW 3.0 will run in colors, and Sun is beginning to distribute it now.

OW2.0 does not support the 2GS (or the GT, in fact). 3.0 does,
but I am not sure if it's shipping yet. We have a very buggy
beta version....

With OW2, it run in monochrome mode only

With OW3 and GFX-Rev2, it will run in 24bits mode

Openwindows Version 3.0 does is supported on
the cg12. Openwindows Version 2.0 is the version that
will only run in monochrome mode on a 24bit fb. I have
been using it for months and am happy with it.

OW3.0 supports GS. You can get a 3.0 beta if you contact your Sun rep.

V3 is supposed to. There may be a patch for V2 with GFX.ReV2 for 4.1.1 also.

OW 2.x does run on the GS, BUT ... not in color. The 3.0 OW fixes this
(at least the beta copy does :) ). Not sure when the `real` 3.0 will
be released, but probably in the next few months. Good Luck.

This problem came up here this summer and after contacting Sun
we found out that OW2 does NOT support color on cgtwelve0.
The new version, 3.0 does support the cgtwelve0. We were able
to obtain a beta release of OW3 from our local sales rep.

OW2.0 doesn't support it. GS customers have been getting 3.0beta.

Yes.

Not in the MIT version, but someone will probably update the R4 patches.

It is supported and works fine with OWV3. Dunno about X11R5.
