OFFICE MEMO SUMMARY: Seagate ST83220K Date:10/16/91
This is a summary of my posting requesting information on using a Seagate
ST83220K (3.220GB) disk drive with a Sun ISP 80 controller under SunOS 4.1.1.
I wish to thank all those who responded, the information was invaluable.

The bottom line is that this disk drive DOES work with the ISP 80 controller.
It is necessary to have the latest firmware on the controller board. According
to Sun, when the system boots the ISP 80 controller firmware date is displayed
on the console. The latest release has a date of April 18, 1991. The previous
release (April 4, 1991) should also work. The PROM upgrade is available from
Sun for about $50.00.

We formatted the drive to 2.5GB using the following format.dat entry provided
by Heino Peters:

disk_type = "ST83220K" \
        : ctlr = "ISP-80" \
        : ncyl = 2652 : acyl = 1 : pcyl = 2653 : nhead = 19 : nsect = 102 \
        : rpm = 4365 : bpt = 63840 : skew = 0 : precomp = 0

Seagate's companion dual-head drive, the ST83050K, is virtually identical but
does not work. The dual head drive has a 9.34MB/sec transfer rate which the
ISP 80 controller can not handle. One respondent said it *might* work with a
new PROM upgrade and SunOS 4.1.2 but this is highly speculative. Sun told me
they don't see much advantage in the dual head drive for most customers and
don't expect to support it.
