 I started getting the error
 ld.so map heap error (9) for /dev/ zero
 after installing openwins version 3 on a sun running 4.1.1

Eckhard R"uggeberg eckhard@ts.go.dlr.de provided the answer.

 on the cdrom in directory /cdrom/OpenWindows/sun4/lib/OSpatches
 are updates to ld.so ldconfig and ldd. If you are NOT running
 4.1.2 install these patches. 4.1.2 already has the problem
 fixed.
