As expected I was [and still am being] deluged with replies, almost universally
stating that several patches are incompatible with each other, produced under
pressure in many cases, are largely UNTESTED at Sun, and probably won't
even make it INTO the next release. If everyone AND Hal Stern sez this, it
must be true.
So it looks like I'll have to take machete in hand and wade into the swamp,
after all. Sigh.
