Summary:

Many people responded to check the /dev directory for all the
[r]sd[*][a-h] entries.

They were all there so that was not the problem

I was having the same problem tonight with my
Micropolis 1598-15 1.2GB scsi disks. Everything looked
fine until I got the the assigning the partition
infomation in suninstall.

My problem was that the partitions on all of my disks
had changed to all zeros (ie partition a starts in
cyl 0 and goes for 0 sectors, c starts in cyl 0 and goes
for 0 sectors, the same for all partitions.)

I fired up format and gave the C and h (free hog) partitions
a start at cyl 0 and go for 1931 cyls.

This worked after I fought with the problem for the last 5
hours. That's the last time someone else formats and
partition disks for me.

Good Luck

One person actually pointed out there was a typo in my last summary for these
disks. I mistakenly swapped pcyl and ncyl in posting the summary but not
with actually formatting the drive. The correct working entry is:

disk_type = "Micropolis 1598-15" \
        : ctlr = MD21 : fmt_time = 4 \
        : cache = 0x11 : trks_zone = 15 : asect = 8 : atrks = 45 \
        : ncyl = 1928 : acyl = 3 : pcyl = 1931 : nhead = 15 : nsect = 70 \
        : rpm = 3600 : bpt = 41664

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pcyl = ncyl + acyl !!!!!!!!!!!
