To recap, I had an 8mm tape stuck in an exabyte drive, and power-cycling
the drive unit didn't convince it to eject.
Well, I got responses from:

Wayne Mildren wjm@itd.dsto.gov.au
J.James(Jim)Belonis II manager@dirac.phys.washington.edu
Tim Evans fallst!tkevans@uunet.UU.NET
Bill JenningsCheck bjc@level1.com
Alan Harder ash@MATH.AMS.ORG
Jason C. Austin j.c.austin@larc.nasa.gov
Robert Balkenhol rbalkenh@sookit.jpl.nasa.gov

Most of which said: take the drive out of the case, and diddle the
small white lever to open the door. That didn't work. Bill JenningsCheck
had also siad that he'd had to open the top of the drive, and cut the
tape. Then it ejected when the drive was powered on the the normal
eject button pressed. That worked for me.

Be warned if you ever have to try this: you'll need a set of very small
Torx drivers. The screws you'll have to loosen are the smallest Torx
screws I've ever seen.
