SUMMARY: request for info on remote restores via a pipe

Thanks for all the replies. It turned out that the last reply was exactly
the one that I needed---it appears that the Sun stuff works and the only
reason that the DEC stuff operated the way that it did was that it was
(conveniently) broken.
