Folks--

Thanks for the response to the question of lost cost printers that work with Newsprint 1.0. Emma Hendler offered the most complete info on printer support. her message is:
NeWSprint 1.0 - PRINTERS
------------------------

This is a list of the printers that support NeWSprint as of 1/91. The Hewlett-Packard printers and the Seiko 5500 series color printers have
handlers included in NeWSprint 1.0.

All other handlers must be obtained directly from the printer vendor.
A list of vendor contacts is also included at the end of this list.

If a printer is not supported here, customers have 2 choices -- they
can write a handler themselves using the development tools included
with NeWSprint, or they can have one written for them through Sun

I personally have tried to hook up a HP LJ11P with a 1 MB memory upgrade using Newsprint 1.0 (this printer is not on the list) and it works beautifully. Using an Aurora 10S parallel port, this print speed is about 30 seconds a text page. This is wonderful compared to the older HP LJ II with 2.5MB of total RAM, which is about 3 minutes a page (all other hardweare/software the same). It would seem that any printer with good HP-PCL 4 or 5 emulation will work.
