Howdy Hey Hey Fellow Sun Gurus !!

The Problem:

>I have setup 2 test machine on the same subnet in the following manner
>each running as its own master.

>domainname machine.domainname
>domainname > /etc/defaultdomain
>touch /var/yp/etc/hosts

>Makefile :

>all : hosts

>at this point I run /usr/etc/yp/ypinit -m single user

>after domainname machine.domainname again.

>NIS comes up fine ... but DNS is flaky !!!

>My resolv.conf looks like any normal one should:

>domain domainname
nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XX
>nbameserver XXX.XXX.XXX>XX

>when I ping or telnet a host on internet it will give me

>service(ping or telnet): unknown host FQDN

>whIs it possible there is some sort of timing problem here?
>We are a site in the Antarctic and our T1 connexn can be slow and|or flaky
>mostly its just a bit slow though ...

I REALLY SHOULD have mentioned that the lookup and pings were occasionally
working!!! Thus, I would have avoided the responses telling me to check
whether or not I had altered the Makefile so as to add the yp_interdomain
key to my hosts.byname and hosts.byaddr maps.

( *SLAP* ) my fualt.

I still haven't really uncovered the underlying culprit here. But
I HAVE COME UP WITH A SOLUTION THAT WORKS QUITE WELL!!

Simply return to the Engineers who asked you to implement this design
without using any secondary nameservers on your various Subnets and
say "Damnit we've got to have secondary servers here". Create your
secondary server and all of the sudden *WOW* everything is beautiful.

I have also slightly altered my original design such to accomodate
the integration of maps for managemen ( again this has been demanded ).
Thus, I now intend to implement with 1 master 1 slave and I will put
the secondary server on the slave to allow for Continued Name Service
even if the Master server is down for any reason.

Again Many Thanks To All Who Responded:
