Thanks to all who responded with help on this problem of failing to be
able to delete messages in one's mailbox using the /usr/bin/mail program.
I learned that there is a directory in /var/mail called :saved which had gotten removed
and was causing the problem. (THAT'S what that directory was! ;-) )
Several folks said to cease and desist in using /usr/bin/mail anyway. They
said to use /usr/bin/mailx which is a superior product. (And BTW, if you
are using /usr/ucb/mail, that points to /usr/bin/mailx. So they are one and
the same.)
