Thanks people,

My original posting, when I read it back, seemed to imply that everything
was hunky when I rebooted (not the case).

Lot's of replies suggested checking /tmp and /var/ and /var/spool, always
a good one but Tim Evans sent me in right direction and Marc Rinfret hit
the nail on the head....

I used

find / -xdev -type f -size +500 -ls

to check for files > 500 blocks and found

        /vmunix
        /dev/rdat

The DATS on our system are /dev/rdat0 and /dev/rdat1 so obviously *someone*
had tried writing to a dat with the wrong name. I'll keep an eye out for this
one in future.
