Thank you all very much for the help. I must admit I was overwhelmed
with the number of responses I received! As the footer below indicates,
it would seem a little RTFM on my part would be in order!!! :)
Anyway, the response is to edit the /etc/ttytab file and label all the
virtual ttys as 'unsecure'. By setting console to unsecure, single user
boot will require a password to get in (which is the avenue I took).
