SUMMARY - modem file transfer protocols

My original question was:

> I wish to provide remote PC users with access to my Sun server via modem.
> Not only do I want them to be able to log in and run a terminal session,
> I would also like to have them download files to their PC's, using
> Xmodem, Zmodem, kermit and such like.

Thanks to all who responded.
Here is a summary of the responses.

Yes. Install kermit, available as source or binaries from
kermit.columbia.edu. It is the most robust transfer protocol
available, and provides an excellent outgoing outgoing call mechanism
for modems. Second, install hylafax, available as source or binaries
from sgi.com:/sgi/fax, written by Sam Leffler. It is a fax-in/out,
dial-in handling daemon for your Sun, with binaries available for
SunOS 4.1.x (which I compiled), and ghostscript for processing the fax
files from fax to postscript format, and text to postscript to fax.
Nice stuff, really. I'm about to update that with the latest
installation notes as well.

You also want to make sure you have the latest jumbo tty patch to
provide hardware flow control for your SunOS, this is 100513-4 for
SunOS 4.1.[123]

rz/sz will do that job okay. Have you thought of just using PPP
connections??

boyd@ccpo.odu.edu - Boyd Fletcher
i have x,y,z modem & kermit source code if you would like it.

rali@hri.com - Reto Lichtensteiger
+sigh+ I've been pestering archie and otherwise to try and find the
source to:
   rzsz9305.tar.Z
which is Chuck Forsberg's zmodem implemented for *nix.
There does appear to be a version in
   ftp.uu.net:/systems/unix/linux/sources/usr.bin/Communications/rzsz*
I presume it's the standard version with a Makefile massaged to compile
under Linux.

sps@gateway.bsis.com - Stephen Schaefer
For $20 (per ``port'', whatever that is) you can get
xmodem/ymodem/zmodem protocol support from
Omen Technology Inc
Post Office Box 4681
Portland OR 97208
Kermit is available by ftp'ing to kermit.columbia.edu. Read the
accompanying license.

fetrow@biostat.washington.edu - Dave Fetrow
The best version of xyzmodem is probably commercial but "szrz" is pretty
decent (you can use archie to find it) and the very best kermits are NEVER
commercial. YOu need to tune them to be speedy (the defaults for kermit is
always to use the oldest version of the protocol which is quite a poor choice
for modern equipment) so buying the C-Kermit manual is a real good idea.
Software available from watson.cc.columbia.edu via anon fto.

hunger@hitech.com - Henry Unger
Get kermit for the sun. Available from same place as DOS kermit:
watsun.cc.columbia.edu

Thanks again to all - I have got kermit already, and will try
x,y and z modem once I also grab them off the net.
