Summary:
========

SPARCstation 10, model 20 to model 71 upgrade will or will
not work. No clear consensus from either Sun or the Net.
Sometimes that's just the way it is. ;-|

Subject: ?: S10-model20 to S10-model71 upgrade?
Date: Wed, 14 Jun 1995 15:38:36 -0400 (EDT)

We need to upgrade SPARC 10 model 20 workstations
to model 71. What is the required software/hardware?

Is this supported on SunOS 4.1.4?
        Is a motherboard modification required?
        Any gotchas?

We are getting mixed answers from Sun.

A 70 Mhz MBus board. But seriously, the model 20 was just
a Model 30 MBus board with a first batch defect in the TI
chip. With the exception of the MBus board all SS10 machines
were more or less the same.

>From Sun? The main difference between a SS10 and SS20 is
the clock of the SBus and MBus. While the SS20 has a faster
clock it is missing ISDN, has a substantialy cheaper power
supply and case--- granted the SS20 is also a substantialy
cheaper machine.
The Model 71 module has 1 MB SuperCache and should work fine.
At 70Mhz or even 60 Mhz either a 40Mhz or 50Mhz bus will need
the cache. When the M91 is available it should also work.
The Sun upgrade price list just does not include the Model
20 processor to M71. The card has no value, its not usable
in MP so just remove it, negotiate a good price and put the
new card in.

Depending upon your application and budget you might also
want to consider a pair of M51 modules since they together
could potentialy--- depending upon source--- cost less than
the M71 and depending upon your use (under Solaris) outperform
a single M71.

This might help (in addition to what I sent yesterday), fresh from SMCC:

SS20-71 SS10-71 ------------ ------------ SPECint92 125.8 (100%) 123.5 ( 98%) SPECfp92 121.2 (100%) 118.0 ( 97%)

SS20-712 SS10-712 ----------- ----------- SPECrate_int92 5726 (100%) 5524 ( 96%) SPECrate_fp92 5439 (100%) 5243 ( 96%)

Don't believe ANYBODY unless he's done it himself. (I didn't. ;-)

You need one of the following OS versions : - Solaris 1.1.1 v.B (SunOS 4.1.3_U1 version B) - Solaris 1.1.2 (SunOS 4.1.4) - Solaris 2.3 (SunOS 5.3, first version is hw 11/93 and last 8/94) - Solaris 2.4 (SunOS 5.3)

> Is a motherboard modification required?

2 or 3 jumpers must be moved so the motherboard will run at 40MHz instead of the original 33MHz for model-20 (36MHz for model-30). One of the jumpers will tell the machine if it has a Super-cache CPU module or not.

> Any gotchas?

None, unless Sun have found speed problems with these early model SS10s after a model 71 is installed.

> Is this even a good idea?

Yes, I think so. It will get even better when Sun sometime will start delivering the promised model 91 (90MHz) and model 121 (120MHz) unless the motherboard can't keep up with these fast CPU models.

a look on the upgrade table from SunExpress tells me a NO for your upgrade.

SPARC 10, model 20's will require a chassis upgrade to support the 71 module.
