Dear fellow Sun managers,
This is actually not a summary, as I am still unable to locate the cause
of my difficulties. Meantime, other things have been taking away my
attention and time. I also would like to apologize this late summary.
Anyways, the difficulties of rsh (and other r commands) probably are due
to the fact that the SunOS 4.1.3U1 machine (a SS2) runs BIND 4.9.3 P1
and BINDrized libc shared lib (still beta 23 based). The SS5 runs
Solaris 2.5.
Both machines have TCP wrapper, configured to allow our internal hosts
to communicate with each other.
The symtom is pretty wierd, I can rsh from the SS2 to the SS5 but not
the other way around without being prompted for a password.
FQDNs have always been used in the .rhosts so that's not an issue.
On the SS2, other r* command even failed to work. On the SS5, their
counterparts give me a "permission denied" error.
I hate to admit this, but I am about to give up spending time on this,
as we migrate more and more machines to Solaris 2.5, including the SS2,
which is in fact the only SunOS 4.1.3U1 machine right now. Once another
machine is in, I will have the opportunity to configure the other one
as a temp name server, install Solaris 2.5 on the SS2, and then put
it back as a name server again.
So, the problem is still unsolved but I am going to live with it for
a week or so :(
