The responses I received to this query were excellent and it would
seem that many sun managers have come up against this shortcoming in
        PC X-server software.

The general consensus was as follows:

        1. There was not a problem with my PC X-server except that it cannot
           handle NeWS or DPS extensions.

        2. Use Alladdin's ghostview 3.51 which I've since downloaded from the
web site, compiled for Solaris 2.4 and it works fine for Postscript
display to PC's using PC X-server software.

        3. And, ADOBE provide a product called ADOBE NX classic that wraps
the DPS calls on the remote
end, does the DPS interpretation, and converts it to normal X11.
