My original problem was:
Installing a simple patch, the script fell over with
the error message:
pkgadd: ERROR: checkinstall script did not complete correctly
The solution that worked for me (provided by Umesh Vaghela,
Stuart Kendrick, and Celeste Stokely) was to move the patch into the
/tmp dir and install it from there.
Many thanks to everyone (~12 people) who replied to my question.
