Many thanks to the 3 gentlemen who responded.
Looks like this is a non-problem and can be
ignored.

Has anyone seen "mt status" on an Exabyte wait until the drive is ready,
instead of responding "Device busy"?

Device busy is typically returned if another process has the tape open,.
Hangs typically occur when loading a tape.

From my experience that is the way it works on SunOS. If the drive is
loading the mt command will hang waiting. It also waits for a bit if the
mt command is the first command to the unit - the OS does some sort of reset
which causes the tape to do some gyrations.
On Solaris it seems to answer right away. Just the way the drivers were
written I guess.....

I think this is what happens on exabytes (maybe on scsi cartridges as
well) -- the open on the device hangs until the drive is ready I
think. This probably depends on details of the device driver -- it's
not unique to Suns or to exabytes, although I have seen machines &
drives (1/2 in drives I think, probably on Suns) that didn't do this
but came back with busy immediately.
