Hi had many replies -thanks, which were mostly a variation of the
following from Jens Fischer:

"you can create a logfile, e.g. /tmp/tmpcons, and start an xterm with
the
following command:
xterm -e tail -f /tmp/xxx

After that you can redirect your messages to /tmp/tmpcons and they will
be displayed in the xterm.
There may be better solutions by using named pipes in order to avoid the
growing tmpfile,"
