First, thanks to the respondents... got one answer, one "please summarize",
and one polite "this is really a Netscape problem". The problem, from what
I've gathered from further Usenet musings, is basically bad programming
on Netscape's part. Unfortunately, since I'm at a University and use Netscape
for free, I can't get any tech support from them. The workaround, as
supplied by Neal Pressman (nsp83273@cae091.ed.ray.com), was:

> i had similar problems with netscape on SUNOS 4.1.3_U1
> i got rid of the dialog boxes by callin this in my run_netscape
> script:
> echo '(setting up Netscape Xdefaults...)'
> /usr/openwin/bin/xrdb -load /usr2/netscape/Netscape.Xdefaults

> Netscape.Xdefaults:
> Netscape*useStderrDialog: False
> Netscape*useStdoutDialog: False

> hope this helps you.

Again, thanks for the help, and also for the surprising lack of flames :)
I figured it was more a Netscape problem that a Solaris problem, but you
never know until you ask!

As a side (but related) note: there has at time been discussion on this
list about whether certain software issues are appropriate for this list.
My two cents: administering the software is probably the biggest part of
system administration, at least in my setting, and will hopefully be
tolerated in the future. In my opinion, the potential of having a software
stumbling block resolved as quickly as this group works far outweighs the
minor inconvenience of deleting a few mail messages.

Thanks again,
Mark Davis
