  "Mark C. Henderson" <mch@squirrel.com>
  Francis Liu <fxl@pulse.itd.uts.edu.au>
  wanggr@ramm.neu.edu.cn (Wang Guo-ren)

Special thanks to Lennart Schultz, which gives me the right hint within
less than 30 minutes (faster than the reply of my mail back from the mail
  list).
Special thanks to Mark C. Henderson (and all the contributors) for the
  tool change-sun-hostid.tar.gz.

ANSWER:

Sun machines (SPARC) have the hostid in PROM (I know).

Solaris x86 (PCs) have no hostid during installation (gethostid returns
00000000). You will see the hostid of the machine after the first reboot.

Wang Guo-ren confirms to my experience, that the hostid is depending on
the file system structure (I have added an additional disk and reorganized
the size of some partitions, doing it a second time with same parameters
same hostid, changing /home size from 580 MB to 480 MB -> new hostid).

The hostid is stored in /kernel/misc/sysinit.

For how to get the old hostid back (or setting a new one) (SPARC & INTEL):

   ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/he/henderso/change-sun-hostid.tar.gz
   http://www.squirrel.com/squirrel/sun-stuff/change-sun-hostid.tar.gz

Thanks to all again - I have asked for new passwords as I posted my
help call to the list - till now I am waiting for mail from the
License Operator (Reseller). But my Workshop is running again using
  change-sun-hostid.

regards
Peter
