SUMMARY: patching questions

I had asked about whether installpatch can be run without regard to whether a
patch was already installed and whether a new rev or new patch was being
installed. The answer is don't worry, be happy, installpatch takes care of
everything for you. I also asked if there were any special problems patching a
system running Solstice Disksuite, and again the answer is no problem...

I ran installpatch for all my patches yesterday and, other than a possibly
unrelated Solstice Adminsuite problem (see other message), everything worked
just fine.

I can not close, though, without mentioning that it took over 1/2 hour to run
installpatch for 14 patches on relatively idle SPARCstation 20s & 10s. This
seems quite excessive. I did some basic performance analysis, and it seems that
the CPU is grinding away at 0% idle, and then the system disk gets driven to 99%
capacity! With all the patches issued against Solaris, 14 patches seems quite
low. How can people afford the time to apply larger sets of patches?

attached mail follows:

I have about 25 systems, all but a few running Solaris 2.5. I need to apply an
updated set of patches. These include some new patches, some that have new
revisions, and possibly some that might already have been applied. Additionally,
one of my systems is my server and is running Solstice Disksuite, with all
filesystems other than / (root) and its C2 audit partitions running as trans
meta devices.

1. Can I just run installpatch for all the patches we want installed without
regard to what is already installed on each system? I really don't have time to
examine each system, deinstall patches that have been rev-ed, and then apply
only those not yet applied.

2. Are there any special considerations on my server? Can I just run
installpatch as I would on any other system or do I have to play around and move
off my trans meta devices for some/all filesystems (/usr? /opt?)? This latter
case would require scheduling downtime for the server, something that is not
very easy right now.

TIA,
Marc
