I originally asked (reader's digest condensed version):
1. How do we change the overall domain of the machines (from databook.com
to smc.com)?
2. To change the IP address of each machine, do I have to do anything
besides editing the /etc/hosts file...?
3. Additionally, one machine will be renamed. Beyond #2 above, do I have
to anything else besides editing the /etc/hostname.<interface> file?
By far and away the overwhelming answer was, "Use /usr/sbin/sys-unconfig".
Then when you reboot the machine, it will ask you for all the new information.
This worked just great, but I also had to tweak a few things manually:
1. /etc/defaultrouter needs to be created again.
2. /etc/resolv.conf didn't get changed, that had to be done manually,
listing our new domain and the new DNS servers.
3. /etc/defaultdomain needed to be set to the new domain (it was empty).
4. /etc/nsswitch.conf was reset back to the default. I had to append
'dns' to the definition of hosts.
Finally, if you rename a machine (like I did), make sure to fix it in the
/etc/dfs/dfstab file, otherwise NONE of your file systems may be exported
properly (especially if the SHARE command lists *all* systems on the same
line). Also, if you are using the auto mounter, change the system name
in the /etc/auto_home and /etc/auto_direct files.
I am sending mail from one of the machines in the new domain, so obviously it
worked. Thanks to everyone for their timely responses (which I had to read
from home on another system since all our stuff was packed up).
