Thanks to Ian MacPhedran, Bruce Rossiter and Brian ? for such quick replies
They immediately had the answer for me (and it was also something I thought
of about 10 min after I sent the message but was out of the office and
couldn't try it).
I forgot to add the user to the /etc/shadow file also. Also Ian mentioned
the need for nsswitch.conf to look like:
passwd: compat
passwd_compat: nis
I had found that in the archives but without the addition to /etc/shadow it
wasn't working.
