Hi Admins,

Thanks for the replies. Most of them suggested to get a backup software
to manage DLT 4700 .

Original Post

we have a DLT 4700 just hooked up. How do i go about doing multi volume
backups with the tape libraries. Are there any commands/tools etc. which
 i need to use ?

Most tape jukeboxes will operate in "sequential" (or "dumb") mode.
Unloading one tape ("mt -f /dev/rmt/0 offline") causes the next
tape to load. You can use the "l" (ell) option to ufsdump to do
multi-volume dumps; see the man page for details.

This is the autoloader, right?

Several, actually.

You can use Solstice Backup, which is a rebadged Legato Networker (I do not
recommend it for a variety of reasons, though).

Amanada is a good drop-in replacement for Networker.

If you plan to roll your own backup system, the 'offline' mt signal will
cause the autoloader mechanism to unload the current tape and load the next
in the cartridge.

Can I assume you have Solstice Backup ? It is all in the GUI if you have
Solstice Backup software.

Hi,

Two words: get BudTool.

It's best just to get backup management programs (You cna do it with
regular ufsdump/ufsrestore command), but in the long term, it becomes hard
to manage them, especially you need it to scale. Legato and PDC budtool
are good ones since they also have NDMP protocol implemented that allows
remote control of these tape robots.

Use solstice backup - alias Legato Networker!Regards,
