Hi Sun Mgrs,

Thanks to all who responded (in sequence of answering):
Keith McCabe, John Malick, Anthony Morgan, Andy Paton, Rick Fincher

Here is my orig question:
> Is it possible to install the new 360 MHz UltraSPARC-II Processor
> module in an Enterprise 450 server?

The general answer is NO. Anthony reported of sporadic problems with
360 MHz modules.

Andy's answer:
> Sorry to say the answer is still no,
> The reason is the limitation of the clock speed of the Ultra Port
> Architecture System Interconnect (UPA).
> The UPA on a E450 clocks at 83.3Mhz and 100Mhz only.
> A 360Mhz processor requires a UPA of 120Mhz.
> UPA 83.3Mhz for the 250Hmz processor.
> UPA 100Mhz for the 300Mhz processor.
> UPA 120Mhz for the 360Mhz processor.

Rick's very detailed statement:
> The 300 MHz's are the fastest Suns sells now for the E-450. From what I
> gather, the system bus speed is a limitation on the processors. The
> processors must run at some multiple of the bus. The E-450 has a 100 MHz bus
> while the E-3500 has a 120 MHz bus, so the 3500 can run the faster processors.
> When the machines have a 167 MHz or 250 MHz processors the bus is downgraded
> to run at 83 MHz. 2 x 83 ~ 167, 3 x 83 ~ 250.
> At 300 MHz the bus is run at 100 MHz, the limit for the E-450, and the 3000
> and 4000 series machines.
> There is no reason an E-450 could not run a 400 MHz processor, for example,
> they just aren't out yet. They should be able to run 333 MHz processors with
> an 83 mhz bus
> The newer and more expensive 3500 and 4500 machines have a 120 MHz bus that
> can be downgraded 336 MHz processors, or 300 MHz processors.

Thanks again, Guenter
