Original Posting:

We recently installed a Metaframe server to give Sun workstation users
access to the Windows applications. It is working great except for two
machines: both Ultra 10s running Solaris 2.6. Below is the error that
occurs when I try to start a Windows session via Metaframe.

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 91 (X_QueryColors)
Value in failed request: 0xff
Serial number of failed request: 100
Current serial number in output stream: 100

The application (Metaframe) works fine on a third Ultra 10 with the same
hardware / software configuration.

Final Solution:

Per some suggestions from Matthew Stier, I ended up running
/usr/sbin/ffbconfig -defaults. This restores the FFB Graphics Accelerator
configuration in the /etc/openwin/server/etc/OWconfig file back to default
parameters.

Several people have responded to my posting simply wanting to know more
about Metaframe and how it performs. The short answer is that it works
extremely well. It's just as good as having a PC with locally installed
software. We have used Wabi, SoftWindows, and VNC; none of them work /
perform as well as Metaframe. At least not in our environment.

For a 15 user configuration the recommended hardware would be something
like a Compaq ProLiant 1600 server, 450Mhz processor, 512 Mb ram, etc.
However, we wanted to test the product before spending $6000.00 on
hardware; so, we loaded it up on a Gateway GP6-366 Celeron machine with
256Mb ram. It works fine. We have 10 users accessing Metaframe and it
still performs better than the locally installed SoftWindows solution. In
terms of cost, the software (Windows NT Terminal Server, Citrix Metaframe,
and CALs for NT) will cost around $6000.00 for 15 users.
