Thank you all very much for the replies(to numerous to mention).
The overwhelming response for software was cdrecord which can be found at:

As far as the hardware goes, there were a few different makes and models, but it
seems that Yamaha (400 or 4416SX ) are the most common and most seem to be happy
with them.
I will try cdrecord, and follow up if need be.
