Sun Managers,

Thanks to everyone who replied, your suggestions are
very much appreciated and really led us down the correct
path to fix this problem.

Thanks to the following individuals who replied:

kevin@joltin.com (Kevin Sheehan
blymn@baea.com.au (Brett Lymn)
Edward C Gardella <gardelec@mh.us.sbphrd.com>

Turns out that the (iostat -xcn 5) recommened by Kevin Sheehan
started us in the right direction. We discoverd that there was
and inordinate amount of read and write traffic to rmt/1. Our
backup services group was running a full level 0 backup on Legato
which has a local tape and runs local to the machine
We thought for sure this was the problem, we had the backups and
daemons stopped. Still the problem existed.

However, after further review of (iostat -e and iostat -E) which
shows hard errors to disks and other peripherals, we discovered
a number of hard errors to 4 cdroms, which when we looked further
was a local Pioneer Jukebox attached to the system. The jukebox
should have never been turned on, so needless to say when we powered
it off the machine came back to its normal state.

Thanks again everyone for all your helpful comments, they cam quick
and all presented viable avenues for us to pursue the problem. Thats
why this list is the greatest.
