Sorry for the late summary, i was out of station.

In the end, i was unable to retrieve the lost email. I have created a new
file for the user "xyz" /var/mail/xyz, and now the user is recieving
mail successfully. There was no quota problem as most of the replies
suggested niether was it a bad disk problem or a pine problem, as mailx
gave the same results. So the question as to where the lost mail went
remains a mystery!

Dear sun managers,
One of the users on our m/c (sol 2.5.1) is having the following problem
with his mail:
this perticular user "xyz" had been on vacation for the last 40 days, and
had activated "/bin/vacation", and it worked fine.
However, on coming back he seems to have received email in
"/var/mail/xyz" for only the 1st 15 days of his absence. he has not rcd.
any mail for the last 25 days, whereas the "/var/log/syslog"
indicates that this user has been receiving/ sending replies (via
vacation) normally.
users r using sendmail8.9/pine3.91, and the the size of the file
"/var/mail/xyz" is 20550363 and has today's time stamp. all other users r
not having any problems with mail.
i am not sure what the problem is and if there is a way to retrieve
the mail for this user for the last 25 days of his absence.
also, how do i read the ".vacation.pag" and ".vacation.dir" files
for "this user, which r in dbm format?
