Roger Fujii pointed out that I could get a clue about the puzzling behavior
of enscript by running it with the --list-options option. This produced
a moderate volume of output which enabled me to find the problem.
It showed
spooler_command="lp"
queue_param="-P"
among other things. Clearly these don't go together. The bsd lpr command
uses the -P option to set the queue, but the System V lp command uses -d.

I went to the configuration file /usr/local/etc/enscript.cfg and changed the
QueueParam: entry from -P to -d. That fixed the problem. Now, why don't
the names in this file correspond exactly to the names printed by
--list-options? I don't really expect an answer to that.
