thanks to all who sent my some ideas of what to check on:

my problem turned out to be a script that another administrator
had written to add NIS slaves, one of the steps was to rcp
/usr/lib/netsvc/yp to the new slave. the problem with this was
the master was Solaris 2.6 and the new salve was Solaris 2.7,
the old binaries did run and handle yp requests but killed the
system in the process. i reinstalled SUNWypr and SUNWypu for
Solaris 2.7 and the system is much happier now.

has anyone run into any issues with NIS servers on Solaris 7?

i have an Ultra 60 2x450MHz with 2 GB of ram that functions as
an ftp server, a mail server, and an NIS slave. within minutes
of starting up ypserv it starts to consume 30-40% of the CPU
resources.

the other odd behaviour i have noticed is on versions prior
to Solaris 7 ypserv would kick off 2 process but on my Solaris
7 slave i only see one process.

Sun has no patches listed on sunsolve.
