Thanks for all the replies, too numerous for individual acks.
Majority opinion is to install amanda which can be found at
http://www.amanda.org

I found amanda package
ftp://nce.sun.ca/pub/freeware/sparc/2.6/amanda-2.4.1p1-sol26-sparc-local.gz

2 replies refer me to a very handy link :
http://www.backupcentral.com

David Foster enclosed two shell scripts that I have to read very
carefully.

I also received replies from several people who said that i have to look
in 'ufsdump' manpage. The following command 'ufsdump -l' will work very
fine with an autoloader. As Tim Evans wrote :
'Most autoloaders will work in sequential mode, loading the next tape
when
the current one is ejected'

Thank you again for your fast replies.
