Summary: 18Gb on LX - Can't find boot image

Two groups of answers:

Some suggested I RTFM on installboot. While installboot is a wonderful
and essential tool to make bootable boot disk clones (made via ufsdump |
ufsrestore), it is a hidden part of the installation process and is thus
not a required (or optional) step during an install. Thanks anyway...

Others generally pointed me to a limitation on the 32-bit Sparc CPU's
and pre Solaris 2.6 O/S level whereby the root partition had to be under
2Gb. In fact, both Ric Anderson and Casper Dik (name seems familiar...)
forwarded me the Solaris FAQ link,
http://www.wins.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2.html and referred me to 5.60
which had the exact info I needed:

"Due to limitations in Openboot PROMs, you can't boot any of the 32bit
SPARCs (sun4c, sun4m, sun4d) from a root partition that has parts lying
beyond the 2GB mark on a SCSI disk.

"On systems with really old PROMs (revision 2.5 or less) you need to
make the root partition smaller than 1GB.

"The Ultra PROMs are capable of this, but Solaris prior to version 2.6
also has a bug which effectively prevents Ultras from booting from large
root partitions too. Patch 103640-08 or later fixes this for Solaris
2.5.1, so later 2.5.1 HW releases should be OK too."

I've tested the results and am happy to say I now have a bootable LX
with plenty of room to breathe.

Thanx for the replies.

Subject: 18Gb on LX - Can't find boot image

Greetings, ye gods of Sun wisdom and arcane lore!

I recently acquired a Seagate ST318415N (obv. not from Sun!) for my
SPARCstation LX. I can format, newfs, and install Solaris to it, but
when I attempt to boot, it "Can't find boot image". A 2Gb drive does
everything expected (incl. booting), and changing the SCSI address (and
reinstalling) moves the message to the expected device path. Can anyone
point me to a firmware patch, or am I out of luck?

T'anx.
Yur umbl srvnt.
