My apologies for the delayed summary.

The overwhelming response was that the SOC+ FC-AL ports are not fabric aware
and are intended mostly for use on Sun's own storage arrays. For non-SUN
storage subsystems, it would be better to follow the vendor's recommended
interfaces which to this day would mean either a JNI or Emulex card.

Many thanks to those that have responded.

Original Post:

I just would like to ask this illustrious list what the difference there may
be between Sun's on-board Soc+ FC-AL port and third party Jaycore and Emulex
Cards. I have been wondering why TP storage vendors like EMC and HDS does
not utilise the built in FC-AL ports on the I/O boards of the enterprise
class servers. We have many servers that have multi I/O boards that all have
Soc+ FC ports - do we really need to use Jaycore/Emulex cards when we
migrate to FC attached storage? We are using Veritas to manage all storage.
