Thanks to all who have responded!

It was pointed out that this is not a feature of the window manager but
a limitation in the Xserver.
If you are running Solaris 7 or 8 one can use the "+xinerama" flag in the
command above.
For Solaris 2.6 you might want to check out third party Xservers like XbigX.
