Big thanks to Darren Dunham [ddunham@taos.com] and Aseltine, Dick
[dick.aseltine@giantloop.com]

to be able to encapsulate the disk under the VxVM it should have at least 2
unallocated partitions and some unallocated cylinders: at least 3Mb per
partition: I deleted the partition 4 and all works.

Thanks again.

I'll post results of my testing.

Subject: vxinstall: vxslicer: ERROR: unsupported disk layout (was Sybase
p erformance)

Hi,

Last week I posted a question and the SUMMARY about Sybase performance.

The last test I want to perform is to install the VxVM; allocate vx raw
devices and run the same test program to measure the time.

I installed VxVM, got an evaluation license and started to run vxinstall.
I tried to encapsulate the disk, but got the error message:

Enter disk name for c4t0d0 [<name>,q,?] (default: disk01)

It is not possible to encapsulate c4t0d0, for the following reason:
     <vxvm:vxslicer: ERROR: Unsupported disk layout.>

The encapsulation of c4t0d0 failed. You can continue with any
other disks on the system, or you can cancel the installation
  now.

I'd prefer to use encapsulation: I have a copy of filesystems, but to
restore the fs is a pretty time consuming.
The backup through the network (the box is at remote site) took more than 24
hours.

Below is the partition table of c4t0d0:

Current partition table (original):
Total disk cylinders available: 34730 + 2 (reserved cylinders)

  5 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
  6 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
  7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0

I have 2 mounted file systems from that disk:

/dev/dsk/c4t0d0s3 10324988 5757795 4463944 57% /opt/raw2
/dev/dsk/c4t0d0s0 20649993 16784759 3658735 83% /apps

the slice 4 had metadevices from the previous test, but I removed them and
make a new file system.

the disk itself is virtual, it's a raid 1+0, made from disks connected to

Does anyone know how to encapsulate this disk into VxVM?
Should I unmount the filesystems?
or do I need to create a partition 7 (1, 5, 6)? or may be relocate the
partition 0, so it will not start from the cylinder 0?

thanks in advance
I will summarise

best regards
-Alex
