Original question was:-

I think there may be un underlying disk stability
problem that I will look into, but the real cause
of the hang was this lock file:-

ls -la /var/sadm/pkg/TSIgfxOW
total 22
-rw-r--r-- 1 root other 0 Jun 20 2000
!I-Lock!
drwxr-xr-x 4 root other 512 Jun 20 2000
.
dr-xr-xr-x 315 root sys 6656 Apr 21 14:12
..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root other 512 Jun 20 2000
install
-rw-r--r-- 1 root other 429 Jun 20 2000
pkginfo
drwxr-xr-x 2 root other 512 Jun 20 2000
save

This is one of the two packages that are installed to
support the Raptor GFX (sounds like something out of
Rug Rats) pci card. Special thanks to Vinnie & Julie
both of whom pointed me in the direction of suspect
graphic drivers. I'm guessing that the lock file is
generated when a driver is being installed or upgraded
and is normally removed afterwards.
