SUMMARY: NIS Passwd Hangs

From: Huzefa Mohamedali <huzefa_at_ti.com>

Original Question:
--------------
When users change their NIS passwords, they are prompted for their login

password and new password. After this information is entered, yppasswd
displays the message "NIS passwd/attributes changed on <NIS Master> but
the users do not get their shell prompts back (see dialogue below). If
they do a Control C, the password does get updated in the password file.

Anyone know what's happening here? Will summarize.

Solution:
-------
Many thanks to the following who got my thinking juices going

Phil Scarr
Darin Bruce
Thomas Carter

The problem appears to have been in a nsswitch.conf entry. The publickey
entry on the NIS clients goes to nis first and then files. This
apparently does not work well. When the entry for publickey was changed
to "files" only, it worked. Is this a bug?
