Thanks for all your assistance one final time, I have finally managed to
resolve the issues with your help.

The key was to install Sol2.8 beforehand, and then ufsdump the files on
non-root partitions afterward and run a careful, painstaking process of
figuring out what files on the root partition were application rather than
operating system based and then restore them.

At this point in time things look to be working OK, but I still have the
shaky feeling that something is bound to go wrong and I'm going to end up
reinstalling latest versions of the applications on the server, but I have
confidence in the stability of the OS level now.
