Fellow Sun Managers,

The consensus seems to be, no, it can't be done. The only way to do it is to
backup, unmount, resize, remount, restore. 

Many people suggested using growfs/Disksuite/Veritas, you know who you are.

J. Brevik referred me to the infodoc 62877723. 

J. Stringfellow suggested that contiguous free space and the careful use of
mkfs might do it, but said he hadn't done it 
himself. I didn't try it.
