PARTIAL SUMMARY: sendmail and anti-relaying

Hi again, Gurus.
I got answers (so far) from the following people:
Rich Kulawiec, Steve Hammond, sysadmin (no name attached to the email), Tim
Chipman, Jordi Vidal, pgm, Nicolas Dorfman, Thomas Frerichs, Doug, Floer,
Steve, Chapman, and Steve Sandau.
Most suggested replacing sendmail 8.8.5 with at least 8.9.1 (various people
had some other ideas, but I'll put those in the completed summary). Anyway,
I got 8.9.1 from sunfreeware installed.  I used the old 8.8.5 sendmail.cf
file to check it out and relaying from outside was still allowed. Not good.
So I put the default configuration sendmail.cf file that came with the 8.9.1
package in place. Now I'm getting this message:
   ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<grant@domain.com>
    (reason: 550 <grant@domain.com>... Relaying denied)

   ----- Transcript of session follows -----
... while talking to mail.domain.com.:
>>> RCPT To:<grant@domain.com>
<<< 550 <grant@domain.com>... Relaying denied
550 5.1.1 <grant@domain.com>... User unknown
Now two questions more. grant is a legitimate name on the mail server, so
why is sendmail saying "Relaying denied" and "User unknown". This is
happening for all mail on this network. Please reply ASAP as email needs to
get through!
Grant
