Thanks again to all that responded. Solution appears to require both a kernel patch and a firmware patch for the drives. Thanks to Cris for the specifics: ST39102FC disks need a firmware upgrade patch 109962-07 ST39103FC disks need a firmware upgrade patch 111535-03 solaris 2.6 105357-01 or later and 105356-01 or later A related issue was how to install patches if we could only boot from the CDROM. We were able to burn a CDROM with the necessary patches and install a second CDROM to the machine.
