SUMMARY: Upgrade Sparc20/Solaris 2.6 to Ultra60/Solaris 8: Is root ufsdump/ufsrestore necessary?

Hi,

My plan B is working well in practice for this
purpose:
1) ufsdump every file system except root on Sparc20.
2) install Solaris 2.6 on Ultra60.
3) ufsrestore every file system except root of Sparc20
to Ultra60.
4) Selectively transfer /etc files from Sparc20 to
Ultra60. This is the key step.
4) Upgrade Solaris from 2.6 to 8 on Ultra60.

Casper made this point:
You also want to "nuke" /etc/path_to_inst (change the
content to a single line with):
#path_to_inst_bootstrap_1

Most comrades suggested to install a fresh Solaris 8,
then transfer applications and data on the old system
to the new one. I think ?buying a new car? is not the
best answer for the question ?how to rebuild the old
car?. Sorry :)
