SUMMARY: Solstice admuseradd fails

(are these becoming more lately?)

The problem was not that the user was not in the appropriate group
(admingroup) but that for some reason, his credential hasnt been updated in a
while; for some reason the groups are also stored within the "cred" table so
the entry for the admin group was missing there. nisclient -co <username>
solved this.
