Thanks to Rich Bishop and especially Mark Shaw on this.

Basically what you have to do was create the group via Identity Server or the Admin console, then in the Admin Console open the group via the "generic editor" and add the objectclasse values

inetmaillocalrecipient
inetmailgroup
inetmailgroupmanagement

Then also the attributes:

mailhost
mail

To get to the group you need to open the directory server via admin console, navigate to the directory and then expand where your domain is, there you should see all your groups listed. Right click on the group you want and it gives you the option to edit with the "generic editor"

Many Thanks,

Paul
