Dear managers, thanks to all the helpful responses. openssl-0.9.8b is avaiable as a preceompiled binary on sunfreeware.com. My problem finally turned out not to have anything to do with my openssl installation which was already 0.9.8. After manually specifying the LDD path for the openssl library I was able to build GNUMail without a problem. Anyway, guys reported that openssl builds fine with the Sun Compiler. I tried it with the compiler we normally use, which is gcc, since we need Objective-C support. Thanks a lot!
